Since 1948, the Khalifa family has been crafting high-quality ouds for musicians in Syria and beyond. Despite the challenges in Syria, the family continues this legacy under the new name Zeryab Ouds, offering a wide range of instruments across various styles and price points. Craftsmanship & Vision: Zeryab combines traditional oud-making techniques with modern innovation. The third generation of the Khalifa family now leads the workshop, honoring centuries-old craftsmanship while introducing new ideas and technologies. Wood Preparation: Tonewoods are naturally dried. Trees are cut in winter (November–February), sliced into planks, and stacked in ventilated warehouses in alternating layers. This method, away from moisture, reduces wood humidity over about five years to 9–12%, making it ideal for instrument making. Sawmill Techniques: Direct sawing: Produces curved, oval patterns, enhancing woods like cherry and walnut. Quarter sawing: Produces straight, striped patterns, ideal for mahogany, cedar, and cypress. This careful process ensures each Zeryab oud is beautifully crafted, visually stunning, and acoustically exceptional, reflecting a rich heritage of quality and artistry.
